Indie film or "Independent Film" is really an alternative for mainstream movies. Making it cost much much cheaper. You don't need expensive cameras, studio, or even actors or actresses. One example of an indie film that made it big in hollywood is the movie slumdog millionaire. How can you imagine a small time indian film making millions of dollars in hollywood. What makes this movie genre clicks is basically the storyline. First you need a great writer that do his research papers, interviews, and visualize the story he wants to tell his audience. Secondly, you need a director that can motivate and sync every little detail to make the movie great. Of course, you can not also take the actors or actresses playing for granted. Though they may be not that well-known, the important thing is that they can portray their roles well so that the audience can relate to them. With this 3 factors I guess you can make a cheap but successful indie movie.
